Psychosocial questionnaires and immune/hormonal assays were completed at baseline, three and six months.Recruitment was problematic. In the intervention group, mental fatigue was significantly improved (p = 0.016) compared to controls; increased NK cell activity suggested an improvement in immune function. Total stress (p = 0.009), anxiety (p = 0.032) and endocrine-specific (p = 0.032) symptoms were significantly improved in the controls.A large-scale randomisation trial appears warranted, dependent upon effective recruitment.
<dc:title>A randomised controlled pilot feasibility study of the physical and psychological effects of an integrated support programme in breast cancer - Corrected Proof</dc:title>
Barbara S. Participants completed a survey on quality of life (a) four weeks prior to the ceremony (T1), (b) three days before (T2) and (c) four weeks after the ceremony (T3).Results: Statistical analyses demonstrated that the ceremony had a positive effect on spiritual and mental quality of life. The ceremony did not enhance participants' physical and emotional quality of life. Implications for future research are discussed. Conclusions: Spiritual ceremonies might serve as a booster for spiritual and mental quality of life.
<dc:title>Do spiritual ceremonies affect participants' quality of life? The antimicrobial potential of C. officinalis extracts was evaluated against a panel of microorganisms isolated from patients at the Belfast City Hospital (BCH), including bacteria and fungi, using disc diffusion assay. Methanol extract of C. officinalis exhibited better antibacterial activity against most of the bacteria tested, than ethanol extract. Both methanol and ethanol extracts showed excellent antifungal activity against tested strains of fungi, while comparing with Fluconazole.
<dc:title>Antimicrobial activity of Calendula officinalis petal extracts against fungi, as well as Gram-negative and Gram-positive clinical pathogens - Corrected Proof</dc:title>
Efstratios Efstratiou, Abdullah I.
